Career profile

The career of Intercultural Medicine, has the mission of "Contributing to the social construction of intercultural health in Nicaragua, based on a strategy to promote healthy lifestyles and solving health problems through the processes of comprehensive training of professionals, generation and transfer of relevant knowledge and provision of quality services in which traditional medicine and Western medicine are articulated".

It has as its general objective "To train general doctors with an intercultural approach that can provide health care taking into account the sociocultural elements of the region and the country, and respond to the main health problems of the individual, family and community in an integral way by articulating traditional medicine and Western medicine".

The training of the URACCAN physician implies a vision of teamwork and multidisciplinary integration. It has necessary tools for personal development, for leadership, to practice at the primary and secondary levels of health care in the country and to continue postgraduate studies in the most diverse medical specialties.


Functions performed by the Doctor of General Medicine and Intercultural Surgery

  • It analyzes and offers solutions to specific health problems based on strong biomedical scientific foundations and traditional practices for addressing the disease health process.
  • It establishes adequate communication with patients, their relatives, professional health team members, medical colleagues and traditional physicians to effectively contribute to the education of individuals and communities.
  • Diagnoses and provides for the intervention plan (therapeutic, rehabilitation, preventive and educational) in an efficient, relevant and effective manner.
  • It carries out actions to protect and promote health in the community, organizes health services applying basic knowledge on management, interculturality and the current national legal framework.
  • It respects the worldview of indigenous peoples, Afro descendants and ethnic communities on traditional medicine and is knowledgeable of community health.
  • It values the aspect of the worldview and spirituality of the patient in the care of the individual, family and community health process.
  • Implements the regional health model.
  • Trained for comprehensive care based on a bio-psycho-social approach that includes health promotion, disease prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of patients.
  • Trained to diagnose and treat prevalent and emerging diseases in our environment and to guide patients whose problems exceed their professional capacity in a timely manner.
  • With ethical and moral values, respectful of human life, the environment and its resources, as well as cultural diversity.

Positions that the Doctor of General Medicine and Intercultural Surgery can hold

  • He will be able to work in clinical activity as a general physician, both in the public area and in the private area, in outpatient and hospital centers of primary and secondary level.
  • You can enter other areas of development, ranging from clinical specialization grants to academic postgraduate programs such as a master's and doctorate in science, which allow access to secondary and tertiary-level medical practice, or performance in research and teaching centers.
